A few things about us

Most memorable date?

A spontaneous trip to Ocean Shores, Washington to drive on a beach covered in snow. We ended the day with pizza in a motel room watching The Price Is Right, and we couldn't have been happier.

Favourite activity together?

Flying out to the San Juan Islands for breakfast or dinner during the summer months.

Most memorable trip?

Our expedition to Antarctica, our seventh continent, and where we got engaged.

Honeymoon plans?

Our mini-moon will be in the Maldives right after the wedding. We're whittling down a short list for the real deal.

We are getting married at Cavalli Estate in Somerset West, a breathtaking wine estate nestled against the Helderberg Mountains, just 40 minutes from Cape Town.

Getting to Cavalli Estate

Shuttle transportation will be provided to and from Cavalli Estate for all guests. We strongly recommend using our arranged transport for anyone planning to enjoy alcoholic beverages on the day. Somerset West is approximately 40 minutes by car from central Cape Town and the V&A Waterfront. Cavalli Estate is located on Strand Road in Somerset West, surrounded by vineyards with views of the Helderberg Mountains. More details on shuttle timings and pick-up points to follow.

Cape Town is easier to reach than you might think, and worth every mile. Here's everything you need to plan your trip.

Visas & Entry

Visas & Entry

Most nationalities can enter South Africa visa-free for up to 90 days with a valid passport. Please verify the requirements for your specific country of travel. Ensure your passport has at least 30 days validity beyond your intended travel dates.

One thing to keep in mind: a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. Worth noting if you are planning to spend time elsewhere in Africa before making your way to Cape Town!

Flights

Getting to Cape Town

Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is served by major airlines with connections through Johannesburg, Dubai, London, and Amsterdam. We recommend booking at least 4–6 months in advance. Flights from the US typically run 15–20 hours with one connection.

For more flexibility, flying into Johannesburg (JNB) and booking a separate domestic flight to Cape Town on FlySafair can open up additional routing options and potentially lower fares. That said, managing separate international and domestic bookings adds complexity, we'd recommend this approach for experienced travellers only.

Getting Around

Transportation

Uber and Bolt work seamlessly across Cape Town and the Winelands. We will be arranging shuttle transportation to and from the wedding venue for all guests, more details to follow closer to the date.

Car rentals are readily available from all major international brands at the airport and throughout the city. If you plan to drive, be sure to specifically request an automatic transmission, as manual vehicles are far more common. One important note: in South Africa, traffic drives on the left-hand side of the road.

Staying in Somerset West puts you right on the doorstep of Cavalli Estate, with easy access to the wedding venue and no long journey at the end of the evening. The area is also perfectly placed for exploring the Cape Winelands, you can visit world-class wine farms, spend a leisurely day in Stellenbosch, and discover the Helderberg region at your own pace.

Close to the city & all it has to offer

Basing yourself in Cape Town places you in the heart of one of the world's great cities, the V&A Waterfront, Table Mountain, Camps Bay, and the Cape Peninsula are all on your doorstep. On the day of the wedding, a comfortable 35–40 minute shuttle will bring you to and from Cavalli Estate, so you won't miss a moment.

3 Days in Cape Town

The essential Cape Town: the mountain, the history, the peninsula

Day 1

The City & The Mountain

Morning: Table Mountain. Start at the top. The cableway opens at 8:30 AM and sells out fast in December: book online before you arrive. The rotating cable car offers 360° views, and the plateau is breathtaking: the city bowl, the Atlantic, Robben Island, and the Twelve Apostles spread before you. Allow 2–3 hours.

Afternoon: V&A Waterfront. Make your way to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront for lunch and an afternoon wander. World-class restaurants, the Watershed craft market, and views back up to Table Mountain. The Time Out Market is a great spot to graze across multiple local vendors.

Evening: Camps Bay. End the day at Cape Town's glamorous beachside strip, backed by the Twelve Apostles with the Atlantic in front. Victoria Road is lined with restaurants perfect for a long, leisurely sundowner dinner.

Day 2

History & Gardens

Morning: Robben Island. Ferries depart from the V&A Waterfront; the full excursion takes approximately 3.5 hours. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. Tours are often led by former political prisoners, a sobering, powerful, and essential experience. Book well in advance; tours sell out weeks ahead in December.

Afternoon: Kirstenbosch. The world-renowned botanical garden on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Extraordinary fynbos flora against a stunning mountain backdrop. Walk the Boomslang canopy walkway for elevated views through the treetops.

Day 3

Penguins & Chapman's Peak

Mid-Morning: Boulders Beach, Simon's Town. About 45 minutes south of the city, Boulders Beach is home to a thriving colony of African penguins: remarkably unperturbed by visitors. Allow 60–90 minutes, and arrive before 11 AM to beat the crowds.

Midday: Cape Point. Continue south to the dramatic rocky headland at the tip of the Cape Peninsula. Sheer cliffs, the old lighthouse, and wildlife including baboons and ostriches in the reserve. Lunch at the Two Oceans Restaurant. Entry fees apply.

Afternoon: Chapman's Peak Drive. On the return north, take the spectacular 9km coastal road cut into the cliff face above the Atlantic, consistently ranked among the most beautiful drives in the world. End the day with dinner in Hout Bay.

Day 4

A Day to Breathe

Cape Town rewards a slower day. Sleep in, explore the neighbourhoods, visit the Company's Garden or the Saturday Old Biscuit Mill market. Book lunch or dinner at one of the city's acclaimed restaurants: The Test Kitchen, La Colombe, and the Pot Luck Club are all exceptional. An afternoon on Clifton or Camps Bay beach, followed by a sundowner, is never a bad idea.

Day 5

The Winelands: Stellenbosch & Franschhoek

Morning: Stellenbosch. The academic and cultural heart of the Winelands, about 45 minutes from Cape Town. Oak-lined streets, white-gabled Cape Dutch buildings, and world-class estates on every road. We'd suggest picking two or three of the following:

  • Warwick Estate: One of the most acclaimed estates in the Winelands, home to several wines awarded five stars in Plattters: the highest rating in South African wine. A benchmark stop.
  • Tokara: Perched on the Helshoogte Pass with some of the most breathtaking views in all of Stellenbosch. The wine matches the scenery, and the restaurant on the estate is excellent.
  • Rust en Vrede: A personal favourite. Book their winemaker's lunch if you can: it is a wonderful, unhurried way to spend a morning. While you're there, try the Donkiesbaai Steen: a stunning Chenin Blanc that happens to be the wine we've chosen to serve at our wedding.
  • Zorgvliet: A hidden gem not nearly as well known as it deserves to be. Their Petit Verdot is a standout: and if the 2016 library vintage or the 2019 are still available, do not pass them up.

Midday: Franschhoek. Drive the scenic pass road into the culinary capital of South Africa. The valley has no shortage of extraordinary producers: we'd suggest the following, and a long lunch somewhere in between:

  • Mullineux: One of the most celebrated names in South African wine. Their single-terroir Syrahs and old-vine Chenin Blancs are benchmarks for the country. Don't leave without tasting.
  • Leeu Passant: Seek out their straw wine. It is extraordinary, and as it happens, another wine we've chosen to serve at our wedding.
  • Eikehof: Home to the oldest block of Semillon in all of South Africa. For anyone serious about wine, this is a pilgrimage stop. The history in the glass is remarkable.
  • Stony Brook: A small, exceptional producer that we discovered while searching for our wedding venue. We won't tell you what to expect, but they will be featuring prominently at the wedding. Go. You'll understand.

For lunch, La Petite Colombe and The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français are both outstanding. Book well ahead: these restaurants are in demand.

Afternoon. Spend the afternoon exploring the Franschhoek valley at your own pace before the drive back to Cape Town.

We strongly recommend arranging a dedicated driver or guided wine tour for the day.

From a day trip outside Cape Town to the real deal in Kruger, something for every appetite

Close to Cape Town

Aquila Private Game Reserve

About 2.5 hours from Cape Town through the Huguenot Tunnel and across the Karoo, Aquila is the most accessible Big Five experience in the Western Cape. It's a managed reserve: think of it as a well-curated introduction to South African wildlife rather than a deep wilderness experience: but the game drives are excellent and the setting, beneath the Witzenberg Mountains, is dramatic.

The great advantage of Aquila is the hassle-free logistics: they offer fully inclusive day tours with transport to and from Cape Town, a guided game drive in an open 4×4, and lunch at the lodge. No car rental, no navigation, no planning beyond a booking. It's a perfect add-on for guests who want wildlife without committing to an extended trip.

Further Afield

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Also in the Karoo, around 3 hours from Cape Town, Inverdoorn offers a step up in both scale and wildness. This is a true Big Five safari experience set against majestic, wide-open Karoo landscapes. Lions, elephants, rhino, leopard, and buffalo roam a much larger property than Aquila, and the experience leans closer to the classic African safari. Inverdoorn also offers overnight stays for those who want to wake up in the bush and catch an early morning game drive in golden hour light.

The Real Deal

Kruger National Park / Imbali Safari Lodge

If you want the genuine, uncompromising African safari experience, there is simply no substitute for Kruger. Covering nearly 20,000km² of pristine South African bushveld, it is one of the great wildlife reserves on earth. Fly from Cape Town to Skukuza via Johannesburg, allow one travel day each way, and plan on at least three full days in the park.

For accommodation, we suggest Imbali Safari Lodge: a beautifully appointed lodge within Kruger National Park itself, with access to the full reserve. The 12 suites open onto the bush, the guiding is excellent, and the experience is fully inclusive of all meals, drinks, and twice-daily game drives in open vehicles. Practical notes

The South African Rand (ZAR) is the local currency; credit cards are widely accepted though it's worth carrying some cash for tolls and smaller vendors. For the Cape Town portion of your trip, book Robben Island ferry tickets, Table Mountain cableway, and Franschhoek restaurants before you arrive: December is high season and availability fills up fast.
